Supply List:

  • 1 Floating ghost Halloween decoration (from Dollar General – $8)
  • Faux window frame (or 4 Dollar Tree picture frames hot-glued together)
  • Garland (black or evergreen)
  • Halloween-themed mesh (e.g., Sam’s Club metallic mesh)
  • Halloween ribbon (wired, various patterns/colors)
  • Decorative picks (pumpkins, candy corn, feathers, etc.)
  • Fairy lights (battery-operated)
  • 3M double-sided tape or command hooks
  • Metal hole punch
  • Stapler or staple gun
  • Zip ties or pipe cleaners
  • Floral wire
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks

How to Make the Ghost in a Window Decoration

Step 1: Prep Your Faux Window Frame

Use a pre-made faux window or create your own by gluing together four rectangular frames from Dollar Tree. This will serve as the “haunted window” backdrop for your ghost.

Step 2: Attach the Ghost

Take your floating ghost from Dollar General. Using a metal hole punch, punch small holes where needed to attach floral wire. Remove the ghost’s hanger if needed and reposition it so the ghost appears to be flying through the window.

Secure the ghost with floral wire stapled to the frame, ensuring the wire is twisted tight and hidden behind the ghost.

Step 3: Add Fairy Lights

Bundle your fairy lights into a small loop and secure them behind the ghost using command hooks or tape. You can add shredded paper, tissue, or gift filler behind the ghost for extra glow, but lights alone work great for a clean look.

Place the battery pack discreetly behind the window for easy on/off access.

Step 4: Add Garland Base

Cut a 16-inch section of inexpensive garland and attach it to the sides and bottom of the window frame. This acts as your base for adding mesh, ribbon, and decorations.

Twist the garland branches to secure it to the frame. You can use black evergreen garland for a spooky effect or regular green if you plan to cover most of it.

Step 5: Prepare Deco Mesh & Ribbon

Cut your Halloween mesh into:

  • 6 pieces at 20 inches (for ruffles)
  • 6 pieces at 10 inches (for curls)

Cut your wired ribbon into 12–14 inch strips, dovetail the ends, and fold them in half.

For each bundle:

  1. Roll two mesh curls.
  2. Add one ruffle folded in an accordion style.
  3. Stack two ribbons on top, pinch in the center.
  4. Secure the bundle with the garland ties or pipe cleaner.

Repeat this across the bottom and side sections of the garland for a full, textured look.

Step 6: Make a Halloween Bow

Create a layered bow using your favorite Halloween ribbons. Alternate loops of different patterns and widths. Try:

  • 2 loops of 2.5″ black/orange plaid
  • 1 loop of 1.5″ green/black Beetlejuice stripes
  • 1 loop of 1.5″ spider web ribbon
  • 1 short loop of sparkly overlay ribbon on top

Secure with a zip tie, fluff all loops, and attach to the bottom center of the window using floral wire or garland ties.

Step 7: Decorate with Halloween Picks

Add cute Halloween picks like:

  • Candy corn sprays
  • Glitter pumpkins
  • Feather accents
  • “Boo” sign topper

Use hot glue to secure them into the garland. Tuck larger pieces on the sides and smaller accents around the bow and mesh clusters.

Step 8: Final Touches

Turn on the fairy lights, adjust ribbon tails, fluff the bow, and make sure the ghost is flying proudly in the center of your spooky frame.

Hang your creation on a hook or wall nail and watch the compliments roll in!
