How to Make DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub

As the weather gets warmer, you’ll probably be showing a bit more skin and to help with a natural glow, I made an all-natural lemon sugar scrub that you can easily make yourself. This is so easy to make, you can also use the recipe to make a few extra to pass out to your family and friends. It also makes for a good make-and-take creative.

What are the health benefits of a lemon sugar scrub?

Sugar scrub is the best natural way to exfoliate and gain glowing, healthy-looking skin. Sugar is a natural humectant, which really just means it draws moisture into your skin. Sugar is also a natural source of glycolic acid, which is the agent that encourages new skin to grow and is often used to treat sun-damaged skin.

Another benefit is the exfoliant properties of sugar. This helps sluff away dead skin and allows healthy, glowing skin to emerge. It is a great beauty regimen for your skin. The texture of sugar is very fine and will not create little tears in the skin as salt or other exfoliants will. The fine texture of sugar will not clog the pores.

Where do I buy the supplies and ingredients to make this scrub?

You will most likely have everything you need on hand in some shape or form, especially since this recipe calls for pantry staples such as sugar, coconut oil, and essential oils. However, if you need to purchase anything, here’s a one-click place to get everything you need.

Keep in mind that you’ll also need glass jars for storing your sugar scrub, so be sure to have those on hand as well.

How to Make DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub

Below are the ingredients you will need to make your own delightful lemon sugar scrub:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup coconut oil fractionated or solid*
  • 10 drops of lemon essential oil
  • 2-3 drops of vanilla essential oil
  • 2 lemons

*Tip: Try to find unrefined virgin coconut oil that has been cold-pressed. The biggest difference with using this kind is you will have less of a coconut smell in your scrub.

Alternatives to coconut oil are sweet almond oil or jojoba oil.

The supplies you need are:

  • Large glass mixing bowl
  • A tablespoon
  • Wood spoon (for mixing)
  • 1 cup measuring cup
  • Glass jars with lids

Directions:

1. Pour 2 cups of sugar into your glass mixing bowl.

2. If you use cold-pressed coconut oil, melt down 1 cup and add it to the mixing bowl.

3. Using the wooden spoon, mix the sugar and coconut oil together. It should resemble a sand-like consistency (not too runny but something you can put on your skin).

4. Add 10 drops of lemon essential oil and mix.

5. To add a slightly sweet smell, add 2-3 drops of vanilla essential oil and stir.

6. You can stop here and put it in a glass container with an airtight top.

7. If you prefer to do what I do, I like to add some lemon zest.

Optional: Some people like to add oils to the melted coconut oil to ensure even distribution.

Variations: You can use lime, grapefruit, and orange in replacement of the lemon. You can also use shea butter for the base to mix with the sugar.

Depending on the type of container you use and the climate of where you live, your scrub can last anywhere between 1-3 months. If you open the jar and it smells a little funny, that’s an indicator to throw that batch out and make a new one.

How To Use Your DIY Lemon Sugar Scrub

I personally like to use my sugar scrub in the shower in the morning. It makes for easy use and cleanup. I use a mini wooden spoon to scoop it out and rub it directly onto my skin. It always leaves my skin feeling amazing.

You can also keep this by the sink and use it to wash your hands. It will leave them clean and smooth.

Final Thoughts

In addition to using this myself, the lemon sugar scrub makes a great gift. Consider gifting it to family, friends, or your kids’ school teachers. It’s sure to be popular! Simply add some to mini jars, and embellish them with a cute ribbon and name tag. It’s a gift that will cost pennies on the dollar. Something that is inexpensive and healthy – you can’t go wrong with that!
