There are many ways to decorate for the winter season, especially in a versatile way where your decor can stay up the entire season. The ideas below can easily be duplicated and tweaked according to your specific style.

Winter Planter Display

Adding winter planters to your front porch is the perfect (and inexpensive) way to decorate for the winter. This idea shows how easy it is to transition a concrete planter filled with fall decor to winter decor by simply adding chopped wood, wintergreen sprigs, and pinecones.

Here is a unique way to use wire baskets similar to planters. These are also filled with more rustic wood, branches of pine, and a real wintergreen tree wrapped in brown paper at the base. Three Little Greenwoods used tin pails and filled them with faux cotton sprigs, string lights, pinecones, and large sticks.

Easily create any of these looks using real foliage from outdoors (can we say nature walk time?!) and pick up baskets, buckets, and/or pails at your local thrift store. 

Front Porch Winter Swag

Spruce up your front porch with bursts of winter swag that can be hung on the siding of your home, front porch windows, porch posts, and more. Satori Design for Living created winter swag using real pine sprigs, real pine cones, just cord, craft wire, and buffalo check ribbon. She assembled to hang downward so it could hang anywhere on the porch.

Making your own winter swag is just as easy and you can use a variety of winter-related supplies. Think sticks, pinecones, cotton sprigs, berries, fake snow, and the like. 

Door Baskets

Door baskets are becoming increasingly popular, especially for winter time. Nesting with Grace used a medium-large basket and filled it with sticks of varying sizes. A simple, yet festive, way to decorate for the winter months. 

DIY Inspired went a slightly different route by using a hanging vine wicker basket. She filled it with lots of embellishments from her Christmas tree, a Christmas card display, an old Christmas wreath from a past year, and extra things from outside. What she came up with was white feathers, succulents, garland, artificial floral pieces, pine cones, and thick burlap ribbon. Using her idea, you won’t have to come out of the pocket at all!

Vintage Winter Decor

For this idea, I found several unique ways to highlight specific things that scream winter. First up is the use of an old sled and ice skates, both iconic during the winter months. The red vintage sled was laid up against the house and the ice skates hung from the top. Then, wintergreen sprigs were placed throughout for a well-rounded winter look.

Second, are chalk-painted skis. These were found at a local thrift store, repainted, and also laid up against the house next to a large greenery garland. Last but not least is a pair of vintage sleds embellished with an old stew pot filled with evergreen and berry sprigs, chopped wood, and a red lantern. 

Simply Scandinavian

If you want to go for a Scandinavian look, all you need is a bunch of greenery. Twelve on Main pulled this look off by putting a large greenery garland around the door, smaller greenery with bells winter swag on the siding, and more greenery in buckets and wooden baskets on the actual porch. 

Upcycled Scarf Wreath for the Front Door

Finish your front porch winter decor with a scarf wreath. All you need is a circle-shaped wire wreath form and an old thick scarf. The thicker the scarf, the better. Fix and attach the scarf around the wreath form, similar to tying it around your neck, leaving a good length for tying and dangling. It’s super easy to do! Here’s a quick tutorial.
