How to Make a Witch Hat Decoration with Dollar Tree Supplies
Hi friends, Lori here! Halloween crafting is one of my favorite times of year, and today I’m going to show you how to make a super cute Witch Hat Decoration using Dollar Tree supplies. This project is inexpensive, colorful, and a lot of fun to put together. Whether you want to hang it on your door, display it indoors, or add it to your seasonal décor, this little hat is sure to bring some spooky charm to your home.
Why I Love This Witch Hat Project
One of the best parts about this craft is the form. Dollar Tree sells small plastic witch hats that already have a nice shape. They’re lightweight, easy to decorate, and the perfect base for mesh, ribbon, and bows. Even though it’s plastic, the hat is sturdy enough for light indoor or covered outdoor use. If you want more stability, you can always reinforce the back with wire coat hangers.
The real fun comes when you start adding mesh ruffles, colorful ribbons, and a bow at the top. The combination of orange, purple, green, and black creates that classic Halloween look while still allowing you to customize it to your own style.
Supplies You’ll Need
Here’s everything you’ll need to make your own witch hat wreath:
- Witch hat form (Dollar Tree plastic base)
- Deco mesh in Halloween colors (orange, purple, black, green)
- Ribbon rolls in coordinating Halloween prints or solid colors
- Pipe cleaners (black, orange, or green)
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun (optional)
- Wire cutters (optional)
- Bow-making tool (like a Pro Bow or Bowdabra – optional, but helpful)
Most of these items can be found at Dollar Tree, craft stores, or even in your ribbon stash at home.
Step 1: Prep the Hat Base
Take your Dollar Tree hat and decide whether you want to use it as is or remove any decorative embellishments (like “Boo” signs or plastic clips). I chose to pull those off because I prefer a cleaner look. You’ll keep the cone portion of the hat as is, and we’ll focus on decorating the brim.
Step 2: Make Mesh Ruffles
Cut your deco mesh into 30-inch strips. To make a ruffle, simply lay the mesh flat and walk your fingers up the center, gathering as you go. This creates a ruffled bow shape that adds lots of volume.
Secure each ruffle with half a pipe cleaner twisted tightly around the center. You’ll make about 12 ruffles total—three of each color (orange, black, purple, and green).
Step 3: Add Ribbon Tails
Cut your ribbon into 12-inch strips. Dovetail the ends by folding them in half and cutting at an angle for a polished look. Layer two ribbons on top of each ruffle bundle and secure them with the pipe cleaner.
This creates colorful little “packets” that combine mesh and ribbon together. Attach each bundle directly to the plastic frame of the hat, making sure they are close enough together to cover the base completely. Fluff out your ribbons for a full, whimsical effect.
Step 4: Make a Terry Bow
Make a Terry bow for the Top to finish the hat. We’re going to add a Terry Bow at the tip. Traditionally, this bow is made with the Pro Bow the Hand, but you can also make it by hand with a bit of patience.
- Cut a 28-inch piece of floral wire.
- Start with a ribbon tail about 6 inches long.
- Make two loops about 3 inches wide.
- Add each new ribbon layer on top, twisting the wire around each one to secure it.
- Continue until you have 4–5 different ribbons stacked together.
- Fluff the bow by pulling loops in opposite directions.
Attach the bow to the tip of the hat with your floral wire and fluff it again for a full, festive look.
Step 5: Optional Mesh Curls
If you’d like to switch things up, try making mesh curls instead of ruffles. Cut your mesh into 10-inch strips, roll each one tightly, and bundle three or four curls together with a ribbon piece. Attach these bundles to the frame just like the ruffles for a slightly different look that still adds great texture.
Step 6: Customize Your Witch Hat
This project is super versatile. Instead of adding a bow at the top, you could glue on little spiders, bats, or even a mini skeleton. Or, you could place your big bow on the side of the hat instead of the tip. Get creative and make it your own!
Finished Witch Hat Decoration
That’s it—your DIY Witch Hat Decoration is complete! For less than $10 in Dollar Tree supplies, you’ve made a fun and festive Halloween wreath. This is a great craft to do with friends, kids, or even for a Halloween craft night. It’s budget-friendly, customizable, and a wonderful way to welcome spooky season.
Tips for Success
If your hands get tired while making ruffles, use a Bowdabra to hold everything in place while you work.
- Mix in printed ribbons (like spiderwebs, pumpkins, or stripes) with solids for more visual interest.
- If you’re hanging the hat outside, spray it with a clear sealant to protect it from moisture.
- Keep your ribbons and mesh fluffed so the hat always looks full and festive.
Final Thoughts
Halloween is the perfect excuse to go all out with your crafting, and this little witch hat wreath is an easy and fun way to do it. With just a few supplies and a little time, you’ll have a decoration that looks like it came straight from a boutique but cost only a few dollars to make.
So grab your mesh and ribbon, put on some spooky music, and let’s get crafting. This project is proof that you don’t need to spend a fortune to create something beautiful and festive for your home.
Happy Halloween, and happy crafting!
