Instructions
Start by creating the cone portion of the ice cream attachment. For this project, use a Dollar Tree carrot frame as the base. The shape already looks like an ice cream cone, so it is perfect for this design. You can shape a wire hanger or low gauge floral wire for the cone if you can’t find a carrot frame. Leave the stem area at the top uncovered because that will give you a place to attach the wheel frame later.
Cut a large piece of batting and lay it over the carrot frame. The batting helps smooth out the frame and gives the cone a rounder, fuller shape instead of looking thin and flat. You can double the batting if you want extra padding. Once you like the fullness, trim the batting to fit the frame and glue it in place.
Next, cover the batting with felt, poster board, or another neutral-colored material. This step helps hide the white batting so it does not show through the burlap. It does not have to be perfect because the burlap will cover most of it. You are mainly trying to avoid bright white spots showing through the finished cone.
Now begin wrapping the cone with burlap. Position the burlap so it creates a diagonal seam, similar to the lines on a waffle cone. Wrap the burlap around the front of the frame and secure it to the back with zip ties. Zip ties work especially well here because they make the attachment sturdy and keep the burlap from coming loose. Add a few pipe cleaners to the back of the cone so you can attach the finished piece to a wreath or swag later.
Once the cone is covered, attach the round wheel frame to the top. This will become the ice cream scoop area. Position the wheel so it overlaps the top of the carrot frame and zip tie it in several places. Trim away any extra wires or sharp edges that stick out. The goal is to create a nice rounded top while keeping everything secure.
After the wheel is attached, cover the round frame with mesh. Cut a piece of mesh large enough to cover the front of the wheel, then secure it with pipe cleaners. The mesh helps hold the shape together and gives you a base for the foam and flowers. It does not have to look perfect because the flowers will hide it.
For the floral ice cream section, add a piece of thin Styrofoam to the front of the wheel. This gives the flowers something to push into and helps keep them secure. You can attach the Styrofoam with floral pins, zip ties, or both. Floral pins work well in the center area, while zip ties are helpful around the edges. If needed, poke holes through the foam and mesh to thread the zip ties through.
Begin adding flowers at the bottom of the ice cream scoop. Pink flowers work beautifully here because they can overlap the edge slightly and create a soft, full look. Cut the stems to about two inches, add glue, and push them into the Styrofoam. Place the flowers close together so none of the base shows through. Slightly overlap them as you work across the bottom edge.
Next, add yellow flowers above the pink layer. Smaller flowers work well for this section because they help create a layered ice cream effect. Butt the flowers close together and let some sit near the side edges so the frame is hidden from side views. This makes the attachment look finished from every angle.
Continue building upward with white flowers at the top. Fill in any empty spaces with additional yellow or white flowers until the ice cream scoop looks full and rounded. If your flowers are a little floppy, you can attach them to small pieces of floral wire or support them with glue before inserting them into the foam.
Once the front is filled, flip the attachment over and add foam board to the back for support. Trace the shape of the round frame onto foam board, cut it out with an X-Acto knife, and attach it to the back. This step makes the piece much sturdier, especially if you plan to place it in a wreath or swag. Trim away any foam board that shows from the front.
If you are making this piece to sell or display on its own, you may want to cover the back with felt or poster board for a clean finish. If it will be attached to a wreath or swag, the back will not show, so you can leave it as is.
For a final touch, add a small red flower at the top as a cherry. This is optional, but it adds a cute detail and makes the ice cream cone even more playful. Check the sides and top for any gaps, add extra flowers where needed, and make sure the pipe cleaners on the back are easy to access for attaching.
This Floral Ice Cream Cone is adorable, sturdy, and full of personality. It is perfect for summer decorating, craft shows, wreath attachments, or a fun handmade gift for anyone who loves ice cream and bright floral decor.
