How to Make a Dollar Tree Heart Wreath (Easy & Budget-Friendly)
How to Make a Dollar Tree Heart Wreath
If you love creating seasonal wreaths without breaking the bank, this Dollar Tree heart wreath is going to be right up your alley. Heart-shaped wreaths can be a little tricky because you want to keep that beautiful heart outline without losing the shape, but with a few simple tips, this project comes together beautifully.
This wreath is perfect for Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, weddings, or anytime you want to add a little love to your front door. The best part? You can source almost everything from Dollar Tree and still end up with a full, professional-looking wreath.
Choosing the Right Heart Form
For this project, I used a 16-inch heart wreath form, but you can absolutely use the 12-inch Dollar Tree version if that’s what you have. The technique is the same for both sizes; you’ll just need fewer mesh pieces for the smaller frame.
When working with a heart shape, the biggest thing to remember is this: build the sides first. That’s the secret to keeping the heart from turning into a circle.
Mesh Choice & Cutting Tips
I used 5.5-inch deco mesh in red, white, and pink; this is the same size mesh sold at Dollar Tree, so it’s easy to find and very affordable.
Instead of cutting the mesh at 10 inches, I cut mine at 8 inches. You won’t see a difference in fullness, but you’ll get more pieces out of each roll. It’s a great way to stretch your supplies and save money.
To make things faster, roll all three mesh colors out together, line them up evenly, and cut them at the same time. A table slightly lower than your crafting table makes this step much easier on your hands.
Making the Mesh Curls
Once your mesh is cut, separate the colors and lightly roll each piece into a loose curl; think “soft sausage roll,” not tight curls. Loose curls keep the edges neat and make the wreath easier to fluff later.
Stack one curl of each color together and secure them with a pipe cleaner cut in half. Cutting pipe cleaners in half saves supplies and works perfectly for smaller bundles like this.
Attaching the Mesh to the Heart Form
Start attaching your mesh bundles to the middle ring of the frame, tying them securely in the back.
Important tip:
Do not pack them too tightly. Adding mesh too close together can cause the heart shape to disappear.
Work in this order:
- One side of the heart
- The other side
- Bottom point
- Very lightly at the top
This method keeps the heart shape clean and defined. As you work, keep picking up the wreath and checking the outline to make sure it still looks like a heart.
For a 16-inch frame, you’ll use about 54 mesh bundles total. Don’t stress if your number is slightly different; just stop once the shape looks full but not overcrowded.
Decorating & Finishing Touches
Once the mesh is attached, you have lots of decorating options:
- Add a heart sign across the middle to help reinforce the shape
- Glue small Dollar Tree heart picks into gaps
- Add a bow at the top, bottom, or center
- Leave it mesh-only for a clean, simple look
One great trick for attaching signs, especially thin Dollar Tree signs, is using adhesive cable tie mounts. Stick one to the back of the sign, run a pipe cleaner through it, and tie it to the wreath. No staples, no holes, no damage.
These little embellishments are also perfect if you run short on mesh and need to fill a small gap without redoing the entire wreath.
