Lavender Dreams: How to Make a Woodland Ruffle Wreath Using a Unique in the Creek Board
If you’re ready to add a little lavender magic to your everyday décor, this purple woodland ruffle wreath is just the project for you! Using a Unique in the Creek (UITC) character board, beautiful mesh, and delicate florals, this DIY is not only budget-friendly (hello, one roll of mesh!) but also packed with creative fun.
Follow this step-by-step tutorial to learn how to make this everyday wreath that doubles as a stunning handmade statement piece for your door or wall.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- 1 Unique in the Creek Character Board
- 1 roll of 10.5” deco mesh in lavender/purple
- Zip ties (about 8” long)
- 2 coordinating ribbons (cut at 12”) – Swiss dot and leaf pattern in purple tones
- Floral stems (lavender and purple bunches)
- 10” round sign with lavender and butterfly accents (available in my shop!)
- Styrofoam disc (Dollar Tree works great!)
- 26-gauge floral wire
- Rustic 18-gauge wire (for hanging loop)
- Rotary cutter and scissors
- Zip tie gun (optional, but helpful!)
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prepare Your Board
Start by identifying the top of the UITC board (marked by the two hanger holes). Using zip ties, preload the board by adding ties in every other hole around the outer ring. For the inner ring, alternate zip ties between the previously loaded ones to create a staggered pattern. This gives a full look without doubling your mesh usage.
💡 Tip: Insert your zip ties by going down through the first hole and up through the second, ensuring the locking mechanism is facing the right way for easy tightening.
2. Cut Your Mesh & Ribbons
- Cut your mesh into 22-inch strips. You’ll need about 16 pieces for a full wreath.
- Cut your ribbons into 12-inch lengths. Only the bottom row will have ribbon tails, so prepare enough for the outer layer only.
3. Add Your Sign
Before adding mesh, prep your sign:
- Glue or tie a Dollar Tree styrofoam disc to the center of the board.
- Use a hole punch to add holes to the top and sides of your sign.
- Thread floral wire through the holes and anchor it into the board through zip tie holes near the foam base. This lifts the sign above the mesh and prevents it from sinking.
4. Create Your Woodland Ruffles
The woodland ruffle method combines curls and ruffles in each piece:
- Place the mesh curl-side down (the way it comes off the roll).
- Curl each end inward 2–3 full times.
- Scrunch the middle like a classic ruffle and clip or hold in the center.
- Attach to the board using the zip ties.
Start with the outer ring, attaching mesh and ribbon tails in each preloaded tie. Leave zip ties slightly loose if you plan to insert florals later.
Then move to the top ring and add mesh ruffles without ribbon. This adds fullness without overwhelming the center.
5. Add the Florals
You’ll need:
- 6 lavender stems
- 6 mixed purple florals
Use zip ties to attach florals directly into the mesh base:
- Slide the floral stem under the zip tie before tightening.
- Alternate lavender and purple stems around the wreath for balanced coverage.
- Spread out wired stems for a natural look.
Optional: Trim long stems or remove extra leaves to fit your preferred style.
6. Finishing Touches
- Use rustic 18-gauge wire to create a hanger by threading it through the two top holes on the board.
- Make a small spider bow using your ribbon scraps for extra charm and tie it onto the top near the hanger.
- Fluff all ribbons and florals for fullness and visual interest.
No hot glue needed! The zip ties hold everything securely, even in warmer climates.
Versatility and Style
This wreath is a perfect blend of elegance and ease:
- Only uses one roll of mesh.
- Flat back is clean and perfect for doors or walls.
- Sign can be swapped out seasonally for year-round use.
- The UITC board allows endless variations. Why not try a centerpiece next?
